A Practical Guide to Breeding Cats

Never say ’that’ll do’!

Always maintain

your standards and

earn a reputation

for excellence

Socialising your Kittens

This is a key element in producing happy, confident kittens that will take your name and reputation with them when they leave you.

Socialisation of your kittens should start almost at birth, although it is not recommended to handle the kittens too much in their first days.

Talk to the kittens every day, even before their eyes are open.

Soon they will respond to your voice and turn their heads to the sound.

Handle them, touch them, stroke them every day so they get used to being handled and picked up.

If you have responsible children around, supervise their handling of the kittens as well as you goal is to produce kittens that are happy to be around people.
Never lower your Standards

No matter how hard breeding top quality kittens, never lower your standards.

You should set your sights on being a world-class breeder of your cat breed.

Desexing Kittens

· NEVER let a kitten leave you unless it has been desexed, unless of course if it is being sold as a breeding cat.

· NEVER rely on a buyer promising to desex the kitten  ‘later’.
You will have paid a lot of money for your breeding cats and kittens—don’t take the risk of an unscrupulous person taking advantage of your trustfulness.

There is evidence to allay any fears of the dangers of early desexing of kittens — The Winn Feline Health website is one such source.
