Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats

Don't yawn!!  Completing a S.W.O.T. analysis may save your bacon one day!

Grab a piece of paper and under theses headings -

Strengths
Jot down what you consider your strengths, whether they relate to cat breeding or not, but especially the strenghts that will  help you make a success of cat breeding

Weaknesses
Then concentrate on your weaknesses - those things you will need to overcome or improve to be a successful cat breeder

Opportunities
Now list down what opportunities you think are ahead of you, or what opportunities you could make in relation to breeding your cat breed

Threats
Importantly, list the threats you may face as a new cat breeder

Then you need to re-consider what you have jotted down to see how you can capitalize on your strengths and opportunies and protect yourself against your weaknesses and threats.

  • experience in web design
  • competent in PC use
  • experience in customer service
  • worked for a time in a vet clinic
  • calm under pressure








Weaknesses
 
    • know nothing about websites
    • have never had a Facebook account
    • sometimes get frazzled when tired
    • no other help around usually
    • no suitable facilities at the moment
    • no-one to mentor me
    • limited knowledge about cat breeding

    • keep learning and improving
  • competent in PC use
    • keep improving, maybe help others
  • experience in customer service
    • write response emails to enquiries and save as drafts
  • worked for a time in a vet clinic
    • maintain and add to your knowledge

Weaknesses

  • know nothing about websites
    • enrol in a PC course which covers websites.  Find website software that is WYSIWYG - what you see is what you get!
  • have never had a Facebook account
    • find some-one to take you on a guided tour - or be brave and have a go yourself
  • sometimes get frazzled when tired
    • eat well, sleep well, have someone to help if you get overwhelmed
  • no other help around usually
    • advertise locally for casual help - you'll be surprised how many responses you get!
  • no suitable facilities at the moment
    • Google cat breeding facility plans and work out how to get started so you can add as you progress
  • no-one to mentor me
    • go to cat shows and make yourself known and ask for help
  • limited knowledge about cat breeding
    • knowledge gained through reading - Google as much as you can
    • knowledge gained through experience - ask other cat breeders if you can visit


Opportunities

  • limited competition
  • live in a major city, close to buyers
  • concentrate on high income buyers
  • market as rare-breed, special breed
  • work with other breeder/s








Threats
 
  • I get sick or injured
  • bush-fire threats
  • new cats bring diseases
  • can't purchase breeding cats
  • limited finances





Opportunities

  • limited competition
    • work out how to take advantage
  • live in a major city, close to buyers
    • could personally deliver kittens to buyers
  • concentrate on high income buyers
    • check demographics of your area and advertise accordingly
  • market as rare-breed, special breed
    • capitalize on 'snob-value'
  • work with other breeder/s
    • friendly with one breeder - find more

Threats

  • I get sick or injured
    • have at least 2 people I can call on in an emergency to help out
  • bush-fire threats
    • have a written bush-fire evacuation plan in place and displayed in a prominent place
  • new cats bring diseases
    • have a quarantine area so new cats can be separated until I know they are free from contagion
  • can't purchase breeding cats
    • keep trying!  but don't take sub-standard cats.  Some-one will eventually to give you a chance and may even agree to mentor you.
  • limited finances
    • complete business plans, budgets, monitor your finances very closely!
