A Practical Guide to Breeding Cats
Breeding involves the heart

Successful breeding
involves the head

Breed planning is as
important as
financial planning

Keeping good records
is imperative to
being a good breeder

Listen, read, learn
—but ultimately,
make your own decisions

This document has been produced by Nola of Oz Catz, Australia’s most experienced breeder of Ocicat kittens—a rare breed cat.

The concepts outlined here may be of assistance to breeders of any cat breed, not just the rare breed cat.

And particularly, it is hoped that the document will assist new breeders or hopeful future breeders understand that with thought, planning and consistent application, they can be successful cat breeders.
You Can Do It Successfully

If you are serious about becoming a top breeder, there are many skills you must bring to the task.  Of course, you must know as much as you can about the breed with which you are working—but there is so much more.

There are many books, websites, and experts who have much to offer on information about the actual process of breeding, so this document will not go over this basic ground again.

Instead, it will focus on the other practical aspects that a successful breeder needs to manage if she/he is to grow and develop the breeding activities.

Such things as preparation for the first breeding cats and accommodation for breeding cats will be covered—but also, some of the other practical requirements that the current literature about breeding seems to ignore completely.

Breeding can be a wonderfully rewarding experience, but if thought is not given to the financial aspects of breeding, it can also be an expensive waste of time and money.

This doesn’t mean that breeding should become a financial investment or that money becomes the main focus of breeding.  But taking care of the financial aspects will mean the difference between a new breeder managing to ‘stay afloat’ - or sinking.
Other practical aspects include the all important record keeping for cats, litters, kittens, kitten buyers, and more.

A breeder also needs to understand and comply with the requirements of the State, Local Council and cat registration bodies.

And of course, the breeder needs to know how to distinguish him/herself as being a cut above the rest.

Dedication, Determination, Devotion

The very first requirement to becoming a top-rate breeder and gaining respect among fellow breeders and kitten buyers—is to truly have total dedication and devotion to your breed.

That means never being tempted to take short-cuts with their health or your breeding plans.

Always do the very best thing for your cats and kittens regardless of the costs or trouble involved.

Never be tempted to make that mating that is too close.

Never skimp on top quality foods or accommodation for your cats.

Live, breath and love your cats and kittens.
